BURDEN OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY IN MARYLAND

During the past decade, obesity has reached epidemic proportions. Nationwide, the prevalence of
obesity has rapidly increased by 44.3 percent from 15.8 percent in 1995 to 22.8 percent in 2003.
Maryland has also experienced a similar increase in the prevalence of obesity. From 1995 to
2003, the prevalence of obesity in Maryland increased by 34 percent, from 16.3 percent in 1995
to 21.9 percent in 2003. In 2003, an estimated 2.3 million or 59 percent of Maryland adults were
overweight or obese. Of this–about 838,000 people–were obese.

Maryland Nutrition and Physical Activity Plan

Strategies to reduce overweight and obesity must be implemented where Marylanders live work and play. A variety of approaches to preventing obesity are reflected within the plan. Some address enviornmental barriers and policy issues, others encourage families and individuals to make behavior changes. The strategies also inlcude educating the public on the need and benefits of healthier lifestyle choices.

Kent County Needs Assessment

The Kent County Health Department hosted two evening focus groups on September 26 and
November 14, 2005, each with a central issue of “Obesity in Kent County.”
"...the State of Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Kent County
Health Department are very concerned about the high incidence of obesity among Maryland
citizens and would like citizen opinions about obesity causes and solutions."
